Your first days on a new healthcare job can seem very scary. You won’t know anyone and you have no idea if you’re going to be liked, successful, or happy. Your new co-workers and managers will start forming opinions of you in the first few hours, days, and weeks on the job. How do you make sure that you leave a good impression on your first day at a new assignment? Here are some ideas to get you started.
Of course, you need to start with your appearance. If you’re working in a clinical environment, you may need to wear scrubs. Make sure you’re still neat and tidy. If you have more of an office role, be sure you understand the dress code and adhere to it.
Don’t save all your prep for the first day on the job. To start on the right foot, prepare ahead of time. Test your commute to make sure you can arrive on time. Start getting to sleep at the right time to get up and get ready on time. Make sure you bring all the things with you that you’ll need on the job.
Don’t Be Late
Some say that on time is late. To make the right impression, arrive on your first day just a little early. However, don’t let this get too out of hand. You also don’t want to arrive so early that no one is ready for you. Just a few minutes or so will be enough to make a great impression.
Mind Your Manners
Don’t forget to be polite. If someone helps you out, say thank you. Be gracious and courteous on the job. Treat others as you want to be treated. Be an active listener, don’t use your phone around coworkers or managers, and be willing to say hi to the new people you meet.
If you have a question, don’t be afraid to ask. You should ask now before you do something wrong because you’ve made an assumption. Take notes, be open and willing to learn, and also be willing to get started with things when you’re asked.
