Travel nursing is full of amazing adventures that can take professionals all over the country and even the world. But no matter how much you love to travel, try new things, and get experience in your career, homesickness can creep in. So how can you cure your homesick feeling when you’re far away? Here are some tips to make you feel more at ease.

Focus on the Positive

The most important thing to do when you’re feeling homesick is to consider the positives. What do you like about the place where you are? What do you like about your job? What experience are you getting now that you can’t get anywhere else. Take time to make a list of the positive aspects of this adventure.

Don’t Call Home

If you’re feeling lonely, you may want to reach out and connect with friends and family. Hearing a familiar voice will be great, right? But calling home too much will actually make your homesickness worse. Don’t call home every day or you may find yourself wallowing in what you miss more than experiencing new things.

Keep in Touch

Of course, now that we’ve told you not to call home, we’re going to tell you to call home. What we mean is to do it in moderation. Your mom wants to hear from you. Your friends love getting those instant messages. Just don’t rely on these connections for your entire social experience.

Make New Friends

Now is the best time to make new friends. We often say that it’s hard to make friends as an adult, but that’s not entirely true. You may have to look a little harder. Start by connecting with your coworkers. Then join local meetup groups that match your interests. The more you put yourself out there, the more connected you’ll feel.

Keep a Journal

If you’re feeling lonely, a great way to get those feelings out is through writing. Keep a journal that will help you express and explore your feelings of being homesick. This will give you an avenue by which to process these things and move on.

Take a Day Off

Just because you’re on a travel nurse assignment doesn’t mean you don’t get the flexibility of time off. You have days available to you, so take advantage of them. Use those days to explore your new town or somewhere nearby. Or just relax and have time to yourself to recharge.
