If you’ve ever thought of travel nursing but decided it wasn’t possible because you’re shy or introverted, here’s a guide for you. Not every travel nurse has to be an outgoing extrovert. There are ways you can conquer your fears of being awkward and meet new people in your new city. If you’re considering travel nursing for your future, here are 6 tips to help you get out of your shell.

Talk to Your Coworkers

Your coworkers are the perfect group of people to talk to about your new experience. They live and work in the city that is new to you and can give you tips and tricks for finding places to go and things to see. They can be your perfect first resource for breakout out of your shell and trying new things.

Reach Out to Your Network

With the internet today, we are way more connected as a culture than we have ever been in history. You may already know people in your city. Do you participate in any online groups? If so, reach out to see if any locals want to get together. Do your friends have friends in the city? They’re a great resource too.

Start Small Talk

It can make you feel anxious, but small talk is a great way to meet new people. If you’re in line at the bank or grocery store, don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with the people around you if they seem open to it. Let them know you’re new in town and get their recommendations of places to go.

Take a Class

Another way to meet new people is to take a class at the local adult education program that are offered. Or you can take a continuing education class to help further your nursing career. In any case, you’ll meet people in these classes who can offer to give you tips for the city.

Join a meetup

Meetup is an online social networking site to facilitate face-to-face meetings for people who love the same things. Whatever you’re in to, you’ll find a group on Meetup in your town. Join and see what activities are happening and challenge yourself to go to one.

Say Yes to Invites

Finally, when someone you’ve met or a friend of a friend makes a suggestion or offers an invite, be okay with saying yet. Get out and do some of the things that are suggested to you. It can be hard as an introvert, but the experience you’ll get for trying new things will be well worth it.
