Stress around the holidays is a common thing. But so is stress related to the workplace all year long. Now might be a good time to take a look at stress management techniques to keep calm and carry on throughout the holiday season and beyond. Here are some tips to help you with the stresses that come with your management position.

Take a step back.

When you feel your blood boiling, it’s a sign that you need to take a step back. When you act in the heat of the moment, it could escalate things beyond your tolerance levels, or the levels of your staff. You could say or do something that could negatively impact your team and your reputation as a manager.

Block your time.

To handle things effectively and efficiently, block your time to ensure that you get all of your tasks done. Create time to answer emails, talk with your team, work on policy and procedure, and other essential functions of management. If you block time and communicate that to your team, you won’t find yourself interrupted negatively.

Get to know your team.

Another way to avoid the stress that many managers don’t think about is to truly enjoy your team. You have a diverse group of employees working with you. They all have unique personalities, interests, and attitudes. Get to know your team and like them as people, not just as workers.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

There are a lot of things you can do outside of work to ensure you’re living a healthy lifestyle. Exercise regularly, take time for yourself, and be sure to take your own vacation time to recharge and renew. Learning stress management techniques that can help you maintain your cool will also help you avoid stressful situations.

Have a support network.

There is good news. You don’t have to do this alone. Having a good support network in place, both personally and professionally, will help you maintain a stress-free, or at least reduced-stress, management experience. Have people you can talk to about your home life and your work life to handle the situation in the healthiest ways possible.
