Being a leader in a healthcare facility is critical. Your entire team, from clinical to back office, look to you to provide guidance and answers and all manner of feedback. You need to work hard on motivating your staff and leading by example to encourage the best possible outcomes for each patient in your care. If you want to become a better leader in the New Year, here are a few simple tips to help you get started.

  • Be interested. Getting to know your team on a personal can help encourage them professionally. While they are dedicated to the care they’re providing on the job, they also care deeply about their family and other interests. When you brace that your staff is made up of more than nursing professionals, you can nurture them fully and encourage success all around.
  • Stay positive. No one likes a manager who simply barks orders from behind the line. While you may need to run a tight ship, you don’t need to create a military-style culture. Aggression from you will make leading more difficult, not less. Your team will pull away from you and not engage. While you don’t need to be best friends with your team, you can lead with empathy, kindness, and positivity.
  • Follow up. When your team does engage with you on a friendly and personal level, don’t let the subject drop. Following up gives you a way to check in with your staff and lets them know that you are listening and do care about what they have to say. This also builds additional follow-up skills, making it easier for you to check in with them on necessary things throughout the day.
  • Establish boundaries. Throughout this process, you will also need to set boundaries. While you can certainly socialize with your team outside of work, make sure you don’t cross any lines into inappropriate behavior. Boundaries help establish a professional and friendly relationship which can give your entire team a sense of satisfaction.
