Being stressed at work sometimes feels like it is the general course of the ways things have always been and always will be. And this often feels like the norm in a medical environment. But it doesn’t have to be that way. No matter how much you want to distance yourself from workplace drama, there will always be aspects of your job that create stressful situations. You may not be able to control the situation itself, but you can control your reaction to it. Here are 3 life hacks that can help you reduce your exposure and better deal with workplace stress.

  1. Go for a walk outside.

Nature has a calming effect. That is, when it isn’t storming or presenting with some natural disaster. And that, let’s face it, is probably most of the time. When you’re feeling stressed at work, take a time out. Not only will you reap the benefits of some fresh air and, hopefully, sunshine, but you will also be able to step away from the stressful situation and take a minute to regroup. Walking away is sometimes the best thing you can do when you are faced with stress.

  1. Listen to your favorite music.

Another go-to option to destress is music. Music works on an intuitive level. Good, upbeat music can influence our mood while sad, wistful music can make us weep. When you’re feeling stressed at work, put on your favorite music. Put on something that makes you happy and also helps you be more productive. It can be anything, but choose something that won’t add to your stressful feelings.

  1. Make some tea.

Okay, these life hacks so far have been pretty straight forward. But there is one more you have probably not thought of. Make yourself a cup of tea. Not only will you have delicious tea to drink, the actual tea-making process is a meditation in and of itself. You can’t make a cup of tea quickly, so it forces you to take a few minutes out of your day to boil the water and steep the teabag. For added benefits, choose an herbal tea with calming properties.
