Over the course of your lifetime, you’ve probably received a ton of advice about what you should do with your career. Some people say you should get a job with good stability while others suggest that the only right way is to follow your bliss. But, the real world doesn’t always fit neatly into either package. How do you find a fit that is right for you at this stage in your life? Here are some thoughts to consider when you start your next job search.
Make a List of Your Current Skills
What skills have you cultivated already in your career? What do you bring to the table? Start by making a list of all the things you know how to do within a medical environment. Also include skills outside of healthcare, like administrative or accounting skills. List everything so you can have a baseline to refer to along the way.
Make a List of Things You Want to Do
Next, make another list of all the things that you want to do. This could be specific jobs or individual long and short term goals. This point of this exercise is to try to determine what it is that you want to do rather than just falling back on your skills and taking another job that will not satisfy you professionally.
Create Matching Pairs
Now, review both lists together. Make matches along the way. Do you have skills in pediatric nursing and you’ve always wanted to help kids? This is a match. It might be a good way to start to refocus your job search to find a job that better suits you rather than just something to pay the bills.
Review Additional Skills to Help You
What non-professional skills do you have that could help you find the perfect job? If you also know how to crochet teddy bears, this could be helpful if you’re working at a children’s hospital. While you certainly have to focus on the professional skills to help you land that job, these added benefits can only increase your enjoyment of your new position.
