The idea of being a traveling nurse is highly desirable for a variety of reasons. The flexibly, the experience, and seeing new places are all high draws. On the other hand, there are a number of things that a travel nurse needs to consider on the job. Here are five things that you must do each and every day as a traveling nurse to make your experience better, richer, and more professional.

Know that every day won’t be typical.

The most important thing to know when you’re working as a travel nurse is that not every day is going to be a typical day. There are a lot of moving pieces and things will change dramatically even hour by hour. It is important to embrace flexibility and not let this affect you negatively. Just roll with it.

Get out and see your city.

As a travel nurse you’ll be working hard, but you might as well play hard too. Take some time to get out of your house and the work environment and get to know the city you’re in. Sure, it is okay to want a night in but don’t make a habit of it. You decided to get into travel nursing for a reason, and this is it.

Talk to the right people.

While you’re on the job spend time learning who are the right people to talk for things to get things done. That isn’t to say you need to go over the head of your direct manager, but you’ll start to learn the intricacies of the organization while you’re working. Take advantage of this.

Find your niche.

This is another way of saying you need to provide value added resources. You were hired for your specific skills and to fill a specific role, but that doesn’t mean you’re not good at other things. If you see another aspect of the job that you can help out with, offer you skills and services.

Make friends.

Finally, don’t be afraid to make new friends in this place. They can be coworkers or neighbors. Join meet-up groups and spend some time getting to know others in your community. Travel nursing may be a lifestyle but it is also a way to get to know different cities for your future.
