So you’ve started a new medical job this year. How can you ensure that you are successful? Fewer items are out of your control than you might think. Currently it is believed that up to 20 percent of new employees leave a job before the end of the first 90 days. While management is looking at better training solutions to prevent this level of turnover, there are some steps you can take as the new employee.
Here are some suggested goals for your first three months on the job.
Goals for the First Month.
The first month is the best time to get to know the individuals with whom you will be working. Learn everything you can about the culture of your facility and learn how to apply your skills to this specific environment. You may need to get to know patients, vendors, or other key players within the practice or hospital. Make these relationships early so those people will be available to help you as needed. Ask for feedback from your supervisor to understand what you are doing well and what needs additional work.
Goals for the Second Month.
By the end of the first two months you should be feeling pretty comfortable in your role. Now is the time to set long term goals. Sure, there might not be room for upward mobility this soon but you may want to take advantage of classes or continuing education offered by the practice or hospital. Of course, don’t forget to solidify those relationships created during the first 30 days.
Goals for Your 90 Day Review.
After a full three months on the job, both you and the employer should be very satisfied with your experience so far. Use any feedback to improve your performance and offer ways to use your specific skills to help the department improve. Create performance goals to achieve throughout the first year of your employment so you can have quantifiable goals to judge success by your first annual review.
